What do symmetrical speeds mean for me?

Symmetrical speeds represent the same upload and download speeds all the time.  Traditional ADSL services provide asymmetrical speeds with offerings such as 1.5 Mbps down by 384 Kbps up.  Asymmetrical services are great for the small office/home office and residential use, but when it comes to growing business needs stepping up to a symmetrical service can really make a difference.  Turn Wireless offers our turnpipe internet products with all symmetrical speeds while our access products are comparable to asymmetrical services.

What does burstable mean?

"Burstable" service is a way to describe the ability to provide more bandwidth to customers sporadically or intermittently based on availability.  As an example if you have a 1.5 Mbps burstable to 3 Mbps internet service then you are guaranteed 1.5 Mbps and can burst or achieve up to 3 Mbps for a short period of time based on the network availability.  This is a great feature to allow for occasional increases in traffic however presents a drawback for businesses looking for reliability and consistency of their internet services.  One of the great aspects of our turnpipe internet products is  guaranteed bandwidth...all the time.

What is a T1?

A T1 line can transmit 1.544 megabits per second, or can be used to transmit 24 digitized voice channels. Hence it can be used for phone service for instance, or for data transfer on a network, providing service up to 60 times faster than a traditional modem. The cost of a T1 line can be expensive, but prices are dropping as demand grows.  Internet service providers (ISPs) will lease T1 lines to provide service to their network for voice and or data.  In addition T1's require the use of a router, channel bank or other equipment in order to provide service.  Turn Wireless service replace traditional T1's and provide faster speeds for less with no equipment required.

What is a T3 or DS3?

A DS3 or T3 product is designed to handle the most bandwidth-intensive applications. A DS3 (or T3) is a digital communications link that supports data transmission rates of about 43-45Mbps. A DS3 line actually consists of 672 individual channels, each of which supports 64Kbps. DS3 services allow connectivity from 3Mbps to 45Mbps depending of if you are utilizing the entire DS3 or a fraction of it.  either way the cost and serviceability of a DS3 is quite cumbersome.  Our enterprise services provide DS3 speeds and above without the worry of enormous costs or expensive build outs.

Do I get a static IP address?

Yes.  Unlike DSL or Cable, regardless of home, small office, or enterprise business use everyone gets an IP address.  All access customers get 1 standard with their service and all turnpipe customers get 6 total to use as they please.

What is network latency?

Latency is a time delay between the moment something is initiated, and the moment one of its recipients becomes detectable.  Latency is measured either one-way (the time from the source sending a packet to the destination receiving it), or round-trip (the one-way latency from source to destination plus the one-way latency from the destination to the source).  Round trip latency is more often quoted, because it can be measured from a single point.  Many platforms provide a service called ping that can be used to measure round-trip latency.  As part of our customer service level agreement Turn Wireless guarantees less then 50 milliseconds of latency anywhere inside our network.

Can I do VOIP with my service?

Yes.  There are many VOIP options available today and for all unmanaged hosted VOIP services they are more then welcome on any of our internet products.  However we recommend using our turnpipe products as they provide greater consistency and symmetry in speeds.
